Techniques specific for treating the psychoses, personality and pervasive developmental disorders, by David S. Shannahoff-Khalsa

Kundalini yoga is an ancient technology of the mind and a clinically proven therapeutic modality that can have profound healing benefits. Following a bevy of recent research studies, yoga has exploded onto the mental health scene, and clinicians and patients alike are embracing the use of yoga and meditation to help combat a wide range of psychiatric disorders, from the moderate to the more severe.

This book—an extension and companion to Shannahoff-Khalsa's Kundalini Yoga Meditation: Techniques Specific for Psychiatric Disorders, Couples Therapy, and Personal Growth —expands on the applications of Kundalini yoga meditation to now include the more difficult-to-treat and complex psychiatric disorders, including the nine variants of the psychoses, the ten APA-defined personality disorders (paranoid, schizoid, schizotypal, antisocial, borderline, histrionic, narcissistic, avoidant, dependent, and obsessive-compulsive), autism, Asperger's disorder, and the very complex and frequent cases of the common multimorbidities.

A research scientist, Kundalini yoga teacher for 36 years, and worldwide authority in the field of alternative therapies for psychiatric disorders, Shannahoff-Khalsa presents a bounty of never-before-published Kundalini yoga meditation protocols specifically designed for each of these individual psychiatric disorders. He shares 44 different meditation techniques, and a 4-part mini-protocol to help shorten and reduce the severity of hallucinations. He also presents a new symbolism-based approach for helping the personality disorder patient to more easily accept and undergo therapy; a novel therapeutic approach for treating the schizophrenic patient; and a new approach for treating autism and Asperger's Disorder patients called "the dance of the heart."

Carefully explaining the yogic perspective on the etiology of each disorder, and offering real patient case histories to help illuminate the suggested protocols, Shannahoff-Khalsa also explores the realities and inadequacies of conventional treatment approaches with an up-to-date review of the current scientific literature. He explains the value of Kundalini yoga not only as a potent and vital intervention for the treatment of disorders, but also as a powerful preventative measure and as a new technology for the future.

With this comprehensive volume, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, psychologists, and social workers —as well as yoga therapists and yoga teachers who have an interest in working with psychiatric patients —are equipped with the tools and techniques necessary to incorporate Kundalini yoga meditation into their practices, and bring new hope and healing to their clients.
